Chinese-language Cinema: Text, Context and History

Chinese-language Cinema: Text, Context and History

CONFERENCE CONCEPT

Following the success of the previous film conference “Rethinking Chinese Film Industry: New Methods, New History” in October 2010, the Centre for Media and Communication Research at Hong Kong Baptist University presents the second instalment in the historical investigation of Chinese-language cinema: Chinese-language Cinema: Text, Context and History.

Our aim is to promote discoveries of new texts, revisions of standard historiography, and linkage of historical study to issues of marketization, liberalization and globalization. Participants from Hong Kong, Chinese Mainland, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, Taiwan, the US and UK will present the latest studies on history, industry and culture of Chinese-language cinema. In view of the problems of a grand-narrative historiography, our concerted effort shall aim at a more nuanced, refined account of film industry and history. Our Conference Series wishes to serve as a scholarly platform for primary, empirical research and to nourish an interdisciplinary and collaborative research culture among Chinese film scholars, archivists, critics and postgraduate students.
